“A gentleman is, rather than does.”
Hi, hi! Welcome to day 17 of the video game challenge! Today’s challenge is ‘favorite antagonist’.
Honestly, there are a lot of antagonists out there that I really enjoy in games because they are either humorous or because they really do have a good story as to why they are an antagonist and not all of them are necessarily ‘evil’.
———-Side Story Spoilers for FFXIV:ARR———-
I sorted through a lot of ideas for this one but ultimately I decided upon Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix.
I bought the original FFXIV when it came out and stopped playing it very quickly for 2 reasons: I couldn’t not figure it out since I had never played an MMO before and I really didn’t have a whole lot of time. So, when FFXIV: A Realm Reborn came out I was hesitant to play it. I was encouraged by some friends to try it and I did. I was really impressed with it and enjoyed it quite a bit. After my trial was up, one of my friends was kind enough to buy the base game for me! (Thank you!!)

After that, I started to play with a few friends I knew and some of their friends and it’s been one of the best things in my life honestly. This game seriously changed my life which isn’t something I say very often. I was in a bad funk before because I really didn’t have many friends at all and didn’t talk to a whole lot of people and I still have that depression sometimes but it’s been much better since I now have people I can call friends and talk to often.
Moving on! Of course in FFXIV: ARR there are many sidequests and one of my absolute favorite side quest stories is that of the gentleman Hildibrand Manderville which introduced the antagonist Gilgamesh.
This side story is completely silly. There are so many jokes and I’ve laughed I don’t know how many times playing through this side story! Hint Hint: Square Enix more Hildibrand pls!
Gilgamesh is this ginormous guy who decides to journey with you and Hildibrand as you solve random issues people may be having and mysteries. Every time someone is introduced to Gilgamesh they tend to forget his name and call him by another name instead. Gilgamesh is working with you so you do not suspect him as the person you are really looking for in one of the cases you are working on.
Eventually, you find out and you are to battle Gilgamesh on the Big Bridge and this is mostly where Gilgamesh’s humor comes in.
He is my favorite just because of the pure comic relief that he provides for a game. Not a whole lot of games that I have played have an antagonist that provides any sort of comic relief.
